The Tigers Have Spoken - (Anti)

With this "The Tigers Have Spoken" live album, Neko Case certainly comes off like woman with a roaring tiger in her tank. Her engaging vocals sparkle and shine from beginning to end. Opening with the western/surf-y guitar - led "If You Knew," and closing on the traditional note of "Wayfaring Stranger," Case states her case consistently and convincingly. There's just no holding this tiger.

In addition to her own songs, like the moody "Blacklisted" and the Velvet Underground -ily propulsive "Loretta," Case also covers Loretta Lynn's spunky "Rated X," Buff y Saint-Marie's folky "Soulful Shade of Blue , " and also gives that Sunday school song , "This Little Light , " a banjo-driven, bluegrass treatment. Backed by the always supportive The Sadies, as well as a few other musical friends, this is country-tinged music with extra added pop.

Case sounds just as natural on the hurting ballad "Favorite," as she does on the animal rights-inspired "The Tigers Have Spoken." It's one of those albums that quickly flies by, because it's all so good. Case would probably be even better known, if stuck with either country music or the power pop of The New Pornographers as her style of choice. But to continue our feline analogy, this is one cat that was born free, so she just does whatever she pleases.

With a live document like this one, it makes Case a must-see concert attraction. So in the meantime, before she gets to your town, do your self a favor and pick this album up.
