I'm Staying Out - (Yep Roc)

(Memo to self: try to get through this without mentioning Cary's former bandmate)

Caitlin Cary writes pretty music. She has a pretty voice. She's on country's "pretty" side. I'm Staying Out is pretty good.

Before you start thinking that this is a CD coated in sugar, know that I'm Staying Out has a number of things that keep it from becoming generic. First of all, Cary and her various co-writers can put a tune together that sticks in your head and you're really happy it's there. Secondly, Cary possesses one of the most evocative and convincing voices around - it's really no problem to believe every note she sings. Finally, Cary's band is top notch, not to say too little about Cary herself and her prowess on the fiddle.

Actually, I'm Staying Out is a "crossover" release of sorts. No, don't expect hard rockers to warm up to this necessarily, but that co-worker in your office that seems to think that Fleetwod Mac was brought into existence by Stevie Nicks could latch on to this. I'm Staying Out isn't a bold musical adventure, but it delivers where it intends to. These are simply strong songs, sung strongly, and delivered by a strong band.

(didn't I already go through this replacing "strong" with "pretty" earlier? Oh well, at least I haven't mentioned you-know-who)

Cary represents the kind of quality represented on country's pop side by the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter (a guest here, actually) and Kelly Willis, and today's country would be a lot easier to take if the spotlight was on these three instead of the cookie-cutter model-types that we see on the country music television station. We good some pretty solid music out of the deal, too, with the likes of the opening "Empty Rooms", the breezy "Sleeping In On Sunday", and ballads like "The Next One" (some lovely slide guitar from Audley Freed sits just right on this one). Producer Chris Stamey is clearly in tune with the music here, and presents it cleanly but not to the point of detracting from Cary's performance. Her vocal on "I Want To Learn To Waltz" and "Beauty Fades" is front and center where it should be, with some really gorgeous melodies behind them.

I'd love to hear Cary with a more stripped down sound, but that would likely be seen as an attempt at an O Caitlin, Where Art Thou. Still, a little more diversity would be welcomed but in the meantime, there's not a lot to keep I'm Staying Out from a worthy spin or two (or several).

(I did it! No mention of Ryan Adams!.....Sh*t!!!)
