Franz Ferdinand - (Domino)

Uh-oh...a "buzz band".

Franz Ferdinand have unleashed a CD that borrows a little bit from early XTC, disco-era Blondie (whether they like it or not), and even a little from contemporaries Hot Hot Heat. The end result is a finely played big old mess.

The guys that make up Franz Ferdinand are definitely a talented crew. You know that thing you say to your friend about his band when you don't really like them, "you guys are really tight!"? Well, Franz Ferdinand are..."really tight". Every beat and every note is exactly where it should be. Some may point to this as making the band lack "soul", but some bands have indeed used the structure of disjointed and mechanical playing to an advantage (here's the early-XTC reference). Unfortunately, Franz Ferdinand are not one of them. The bottom line is that Franz Ferdinand is full of half-realized songs that march along at a safe pace (really, every song sounds like a march).

"Dancability" is clearly high on the band's agenda, and I must salute them for that - especially on "Tell Her Tonight", one of the better tracks here. For the most part, however, songs like "Auf Achse" and "Come On Home" come across from left field and transport one back to mid-80's synth-pop - a place where few want to go. "This Fire", where you swear the band is going to start chanting "the roof is on fire!", only provokes effort to go to the next track. The following "Darts Of Pleasure", however, is only a slight improvement sounding like a song Blondie left off of The Hunter (ouch).

Something good to say? Sure. The band does boast a cool guitar sound and when they break out of their overly-disciplined approach they sound better. This makes up for the cold vocal delivery and keeps Franz Ferdinand from sounding completely robotic. (So much for the "positive" paragraph).

Of course, this isn't enough to elevate Franz Ferdinand to the level of a CD that one should buy. It could possibly lead to something a little more interesting on the horizon, but I'm not holding my breath.
