Neko Case

Blacklisted - (Mint Records)

After two releases that found the heralding of one of country's brightest voices, Neko Case has unleashed Blacklisted - serving notice that we have a fine songwriter here as well.

Blacklisted finds Case quite a bit more reflective than usual. Gone are honky-tonk floorstompers and in its place are songs like the moody and hypnotic Deep Red Bells and the downright haunting Ghost Wiring (appropriate for such a title, of course). Case is in fine voice for such confessions and testimonials (featuring numerous photos of "deer in headlights" in the CD booklet seems appropriate), and in fact uses Blacklisted to showcase that her voice has become even stronger over time. Even when covering a song like Look For Me (I'll Be Around) , Neko adds an indelible stamp. Not an easy chore when you consider that the likes of Sarah Vaughan had previously left her mark on the song.

Case also takes a crack at covering Runnin' Out Of Fools , made popular by Aretha Franklin. Such cover choices are further evidence that Case isn't content to just give ordinary readings. Still, what Blacklisted is about is Case's move from vocalist to songwriter. Tracks like Stinging Velvet and Pretty Girls stand as additional highlights that demonstrate Case's ability to bring it all together. Thankfully, Case recruits talents such as steel guitar master Jon Rauhouse, Dallas Good, and Howe Gelb. Case also seems to have found a kindred spirit in bassist Tom V. Ray, who co-arranges a couple of tracks with Case.

Blacklisted will undoubtedly make more than a few "top ten" lists this year. I consider it quite worthy.
