The Fleshtones

Do You Swing? - (Yep Roc)

The Fleshtones call out all swingers with this new album's title, but it must be some kind of a miracle of science that Peter Zaremba and friends are still making swinging music -- even after all these years. The group started creating its authentic brand of garage rock way back in the Seventies, and here they are in 2003 still having good, sloppy and swinging fun. Admittedly, Zaremba's voice sounds a little rough around the edges right about now -- no doubt, due to all the wear and tear he's put on it over the years -- but "Do You Swing" never fails to play out like the soundtrack to a memorable frat party. From the mostly instrumental "One Four Five" with its groovy organ and mad harmonica, to the fun cover of Led Zep's "Communication Breakdown," the party is obviously at The Fleshtones' house.

There's nothing complicated about Fleshtones songs. Lyrically, they come off like cavemen poets, at best, and musically, it's all about banging out primitive noise. For the The Fleshtones, if a song makes your flop around like a rag doll, it's ready to serve.

You might say The Fleshtones were garage rock, when garage rock wasn't as hip and cool as it is now. But just like that old cartoon with the similar sounding name, The Flintstones, these Fleshtones have always been cool in their own unique way. Yabba-dabba-doo!
