What IS So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding? - (Hux Records)

This collection of loose soul/rock performances by Brinsley Schwartz gives the listener a little peek into the preexistence of a few artists who were just about to become pivotal pioneers in England's angry young man New Wave movement. The group was named after their guitarist, who would later go on to squeeze out electric lead sparks for Graham Parker's Rumor. Bassist Nick Lowe was also to gain greater fame as producer for Elvis Costello's first few breakthrough releases. But here these bar dwellers can be heard more modestly covering Sam Cooke ("Havin' A Party"), Stax soul ("You've Got Me Hummin'") and even Randy Newman with "Mama Told Me Not To Come."

Elvis Costello may be among rock music's elite writers, but one of his best known songs, "What's So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding," was actually written by Lowe and is included here. Both Lowe and Gomm also wrote a few of the other tracks for this release. As a whole, these fellas sound like a bunch of Brits trying to get on down at an out of the way Southern barbecue joint.

And whether you're looking to this for a little musical history, or just a lighthearted collection of blue-eyed soul, you'll likely come away pleased .
