Catherine Mary Sypnowich was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario.  She spent her formative years studying performing arts, including singing, piano, music theory, acting, and dance.  She went on to sing professionally at local clubs and bars in Toronto, the Maritimes and New York State. 

Catherine Mary's pursuit of visual art began in early childhood with hand made cards for family and friends. It was not until adulthood that Catherine Mary pursued painting with a passion.

She moved to Windsor, Ontario with her husband five years ago.  Since moving to Windsor, Catherine Mary has devoted much time and care to her painting.  To this end, she has set up a studio in her home.  She also performs locally in musical theatre and in bars and clubs.  However, Catherine Mary has become increasingly devoted to the act of painting as a means of self-expression in reaction to the beauty surrounding her, a beauty that provides great impetus to paint.  In her new hometown she has the opportunity of enjoying the pastoral setting of her neighbourhood, which includes a panoramic view of the Detroit River.  The sites that greet her each day provide much inspiration for her painting.

Catherine Mary paints primarily in acrylic.  She focuses on uplifting themes, which evoke a sense of beauty, serenity, excitement, whimsy and humour.  She loves experimenting with pattern, colour and texture to reveal the idea of the painting.  She has discovered that the act of painting is much like that of performing, in that it is a very exciting, spontaneous process that is highly stimulating.  She has found that any art form has a way of naturally evolving, regardless of the medium, if she is open to its possibilities.   

Catherine Mary is a member of the Windsor Arts Council, the Acrylic Painters Society of Ontario and Visual Arts Ontario.
